SA scraps jumps racing in a massive win for horses

LAST UPDATED: 13 October 2021

Caring people around the country are celebrating after Racing SA announced there will be no jumps races next year. Declining numbers and COVID lockdowns contributed — but hopefully it's gone for good.

Because after years of tireless advocates calling for an end to jumps racing carnage — spearheaded by our friends at the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses — this decision means horses in SA will finally be spared these gruelling and dangerous events.

Horses in jumps racing face shocking injury and death rates. And that’s on top of the suffering inherent in all horse racing, where too many foals are bred for the sake of gambling, and too many horses are discarded and often killed — sometimes right there on the track.

Why? Because they’re too slow, not wanted for breeding, or they’re injured. The recent history of the Melbourne Cup is just one sad example of an industry-wide problem, on the flat or jumps alike.

Huge thanks to the thousands of Animals Australia supporters who have spoken out for horses in jumps racing over the years.

Time to end jumps racing in Victoria

With SA cancelling the 2022 season, Victoria remains the only state in Australia to allow these cruel and outdated events. Call on your Victorian State MP and Racing Minister to ban jumps racing.
